In the beginning...Genesis 1:1

The question begging to be asked is - In the beginning of what? Does "the beginning of mankind" make sense as the answer? Perhaps you would expand the answer to include all of creation both visible and invisible (including the vastness of unexplored and unknown space). Perhaps you would limit the answer to the creation of our solar system and planet Earth. How do we know which of our answers is correct?

Since the question is theological in nature we need an authoritative theological source. The oldest one on the planet is . . . The Church. You might call it the Catholic Church but that would be redundant. You see; catholic means universal and The Church established by The Christ is universal. One book summarizes the teachings of The Church...The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). I will refer to that text often in the posts on this blog and when I do it will be by paragraph number. The format will be CCC # 713 and link to the Catechism for easy reference.
